i have to disagree with you about the wi-fi. one of the reasons we wanted to become financially independent was so we could travel with our sons for weeks at a time -- we use our laptops to e-mail with friends and family, upload pictures to flickr, watch movies, play games, and yes, even keep track of work! :^)

a blogger last year announced he was taking a long vacation without his computer and while he was gone someone hijacked his domain! staying connected helps me relax because i know everything's still okay at home.

with wi-fi at the parks and campgrounds, we don't have to go hunting for a hot spot in town. so we give this trend a big thumbs-up!

Lots of folks full time in thier RVs too. For them they have two options for internet service - satellite which can be quite expensive or campgrounds with free wifi.

I have a pda phone but when we camp it stays in the truck or camper and is only checked periodically for missed calls from family. If I take vacation days i usually check emails once a day in the morning since i am up 1-2 hrs before anyone else in the family.

@Sarah: Thanks for your comments. You make a valid point. I guess since I am a low-tech guy, for the most part, I tend to lean towards keeping tech away from natural resources such as state parks, etc. I would prefer people enjoy the beauty of nature and the world around them rather than stare at a laptop screen.

What about sightseers using the internet to look up information on the local flora and fauna, or the geological and archaelogical history of the area?

I mean, take a look at the Wikipedia entry on Zion Canyon National Park, and the National Park Service website. Who wouldn't want to have that kind information at their fingertips?

My family used to bring stacks of guidebooks along on every vacation. Now we bring a laptop and we don't have to spend any money, fill up shelves, or weigh down our luggage.

Using the internet gives people the freedom to change their plans. No matter where the road takes you, you have the information you need to get the most out of it, and you know you'll be able to find your way home.

I agree with you on the wi-fi in campgrounds - it is quite silly, really. What's the point of getting away...if I cannot get away!

Thanks for the mention!

Thanks to both of you for the heads up on the Being Frugal link. I've made the correction. That's what I get for writing roundups at 11:00 Friday night!
