Slightly late to the game, but actually I do think it's important to have your financial house in order before you have children. In particular, I think you should consider how you will be able to afford them, and start on your plan for getting out of debt if necessary.

You don't need to have finished everything, but you should be heading in the right direction.

Hints on Having a Baby

Pregnancy can be a joyous time. But it also can be a time of uncertainty and worry. Getting informed is the first step in keeping yourself and your baby healthy. Read on to find out about the changes and challenges of the next nine months. If you would like to find out more detail, please go to our webpage for more information on the pregnant woman, course of pregnancy and becoming a parent.

Before Pregnancy: If you don't get enough folic acid, your baby's spine may not form right. This is called spina bifida (spy-nuh bif-uh-duh). Also, your baby needs folic acid to develop a healthy brain. Many doctors will prescribe a vitamin with folic acid. But you also can buy vitamins or folic acid pills at drug and grocery stores. Some foods rich in folate include: leafy green vegetables, kidney beans, orange juice and other citrus fruits, peanuts, broccoli, asparagus, peas, lentils, and whole-grain products. Folic acid is also added to some foods like enriched breads, pastas, rice and cereals.

Fertility: Couples can have fertility problems because of health problems, in either the woman or the man. Common problems with a woman's reproductive organs, like uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and pelvic inflammatory disease can worsen with age and also affect fertility.

Breast Changes: In the third trimester, some pregnant women begin to leak colostrum from their breasts. Colostrum is the first milk that your breasts produce for the baby. It is a thick, yellowish fluid containing antibodies that protect newborns from infection. If leaking becomes embarrassing, put nursing pads inside your bra.

Constipation: Many pregnant women complain of constipation. High levels of hormones in your pregnant body slow down digestion and relax muscles in the bowels leaving many women constipated. Plus, the pressure of the expanding uterus on the bowels boosts the chances for constipation.

Choosing Where to Deliver: Many women carefully choose the kind of environment in which to deliver her baby. You will need to contact your health insurance to find out what options are available. Not all companies will cover care given at a birth center and fewer will cover contemplated homebirths. In general, women can choose to deliver at a hospital, birth center or at home. Nowadays, most hospitals and birth centers offer birthing classes like Lamaze and breastfeeding support.

Changes in Your Baby: Your baby is still growing and moving, but now it has less room in your uterus. Because of this, you might not feel the kicks and movements as much as you did in the second trimester. During this final stage of your pregnancy, your baby is continuing to grow. Even before your baby is born it will be able to open and close its eyes and might even suck its thumb.

How is depression treated?: There are two common types of treatment for depression.
Talk therapy: This involves talking to a therapist, psychologist, or social worker to realize to change how depression makes you think, feel, and act.
Medicine: Your doctor can give you an antidepressant medicine to help you. These medicines can help relieve the symptoms of depression.

So... You're Having a Baby! is a perfect book. Full of pregnancy information, hints and tips such as the pregnant woman, course of pregnancy, becoming a parent and heaps more. This book will help you with all your pregnancy questions.

I'm 32 and recently freaked about the age and the risk advanced age does to both me and the unborn child, so we just went for it. It took half a year before something "took" and now I'm honestly freaking out. I'm starting to feel like this was the stupidest thing I've ever done. I know both me and my husband will do what needs to be done to care for this child and considering what our income is now we're way better off than most people. But I still owe 2K on my car, $600 to a credit card, and I have student loans lingering. Those student loan themselves suck $200 a month out of my income. That being said I see people who make more money and are in worse shape and really can't understand where their money is going. I recently sucked it up and researched diapers and baby clothes, etc and none of that actually seems too exorbitant. The largest expense I've come across so far seems to be a car seat. And then of course health insurance might be an issue. I'm hoping we can put the kid on the husband's plan since he's at IKEA. Putting it on my plan will drastically drive up the premium. But that's how it is. I wanted a kid "someday" and the days are passing. We'll get this done.

I totally agree with you! I have found that having the baby has made my husband and I much more serious about handling our debt!

Thank you for your beautiful story about your daughter.

I don't plan to have kids for a few more years, which is why my husband and I worked hard this year and aggresively paid off all credit card debt. I want to be in a solid financial position to have a baby, and I want options if I choose not to work full-time in an office.

That said, if I was already in my 30s and had the debt, I agree with the others not to put it off. Just get serious about your finances ASAP and have the baby.

As a father of 5 children, I say go for the child.

You have said there will never be the perfect time. I say that so long as we are responsible, it's always a good time.

Children bring focus and purpose to our lives. Maybe children would be the best medicine for the credit card indebted souls.
