An Update on My Mom’s Health
I thought it might be a good time to take a break from frugal living, and provide an update on much more important matters.
My mom had her second surgery last Friday, and had a bit of a setback on Saturday afternoon. She was taken back into surgery Saturday night, and has been in neurological intensive care since early Sunday morning. She was unconscious all of Sunday and Monday, but over the last 48 hours has shown signs of progress. She is opening her eyes briefly, and responds to a familiar voice. She is on a ventilator, and is hooked up to more tubes than I can count. It is heartbreaking to see your mom is such shape–especially at the relatively young age of 53.
I hope to get back to regularly scheduled posts soon, but as you can imagine, writing is a difficult task with so much worry on my mind. Between hospital visits, staying caught up with my full time job, monitoring things here at Frugal Dad, and other family obligations, I really am burning the candle at both ends.
Over the next several days you may notice a day or two in between posts, or a “re-run” of a popular post from the past. I hope you understand, and will stick with me during this difficult time. Who knows, you may even discover a post from the past that you enjoy and have never read because I wrote it before you were a subscriber. Either way, I appreciate your understanding.
In some ways, times like these reinforce the very ideas I write about here each day–having a solid emergency fund, involving your spouse in financial decisions, planning for the unthinkable by being properly insured, etc. Perhaps when we are through this ordeal I can put more effort into reflecting on these ideas and sharing those thoughts here. For now, I’m focusing on taking care of my family and making it from one set of visiting hours to the next. Thanks to all of you who have continued to keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.

i’m hoping for the best for your family during this difficult time. and of course i’ll stay with you!

Hey, every Dad is also a son. You take care of your Mom and your family. We’ll all be here when you get back. The life experience you gain in these trying times is priceless and the example you set for your children can’t be bought. I will never forget how my Dad went to see his Mother every day during a lengthy hospital stay. Your Mom is very young and I am praying for you all.
Hey; At 52 I went in for a hospital run on 15 months and 21 surgeries – YES 21!! Last Rites Twice and on and on. Through it all – during the times I was concious, I had faith that I would somehow leave through the front door. It was a LOT of rehab, etc. but I just returned from running errands and will prepare the family meal next. Life throws curve balls at times, but here I am getting through day by day. Have faith!
