My tomatoes took a major hit Monday night, Tuesday morning. We are 25 miles north of Houston, and should have had the last frost in about mid March. Well, we had record cold on Tuesday morning. We dipped to 27.

I had them covered up and they still got hit pretty good. I probably should have had a couple of lights producing heat in with them. I lost a tomatillo plant, and a majority of my 16 tomato plant show some sign of frostbite. I think that most of them are going to be ok. The bell peppers took a hit as well, but not nearly as big as the tomatoes.

Cucumbers, strawberries and carrots are completely fine though.

It was very strange to have a freeze in April here. So far this year has been the coldest that I can remember in a long time.

I am starting my container seeds outside this weekend, but I will be covering them with clear plastic bags and milk jug tops to protect them against April surprises . . .
