Actually, as I'm reading this post, I'm sitting at an internet cafe as I felt I needed to get away from my home office. I also bought a laptop, too.
My chair in my home office is really uncomfortable and I am constantly being distracted by my roommate and all the other things that home life offers.

@DDFD --
"Piles of organization" never works for me, haha.. I always get stressed. But you are right, something in between is probably best. As with most things, balance is key!

@Jessica --
Try to find the computer tower. That's a tough one :)

@Kyle --
Imagine how bad it would be if you didn't try! I find if I shut down Twitter and clean my desk I get 2x as much done. Anecdotal, but nonetheless, I think their is truth to that statement!

@Jeremy --
It's definitely psychological! But that is the point... trick your brain into being more productive! I have quite a few boxes I haven't gone through in about a year, I should probably follow your lead and toss them.

@Jules --
Glad you found it helpful, let us know if you have anything to add!

@Craig --
I love lifehacker. I have gotten quite a few useful productivity tools/ideas from them. That is a good resource to throw into the discussion, thanks!

@The Happy Rock --
Definitely. If you are injured you should consult a doctor before going on an ergonomics Amazon binge. Every injury is different. But you mention that the injury isn't necessarily the positioning or improper devices and then go on to mention how posture and flexibility can lead to injury. I would argue that the positioning and improper devices lead to poor posture and flexibility. The bouncing ball is a neat idea, my office chair sucks so I should try that :)

@Garry -
I think my mood is usually rushed and grumpy when surrounded by a lot of clutter. If I clean it up, I usually become a lot more relaxed and "happy go lucky" or whatever the phrase is.

Good post. I notice that my mood is different when I am surrounded by tons of junk like the first picture. I feel more comfortable after I have had a little tidy up.

There are competing theories on ergonomics. I am at the computer 24/7 and had worsening wrist pain to the point were it had me taking breaks ever few minutes. After some looking around I settled on the book Pain Free that says the pain is a symptom not of improper devices or even really positioning, but rather muscular-skeletal imbalances.

Our bodies can easily handle moving a mouse all day, but things like posture and flexibility cause use to us our bodies in ways that our muscle, tendons, and ligaments weren't designed to be used. Using ergonomic stuff and often even surgery is addressing the symptom and not the problem, which is muscular or skeletal in nature. After of few weeks of doing some stretches and taking notice to my posture the wrist pain was completely gone without changing my habits or my desk. It may not work for everyone, but it connected with me.

I even like to sit on a workout ball as a chair now. The bouncing is great. It makes you smile, spurs my creativity, and burns some calories.

lifehacker.com always has good useful tips on creating a simple home office with lack of space. I think keeping things simple, maybe even being a bit creative can get you the space you need to be productive.

Good discussion on making a productive work space. I've actually been on a week long declutter mission in my home office. It's been over 3 years overdue, but the results have me feeling more motivated and productive than ever.

While my office was a dedicated space, it was also just a room tucked away upstairs, and as a result it became a storage space when we moved into the house about 4 years ago. So I had a nice desk and computer setup, but most of the space was taken up with old moving boxes that haven't been opened in years. Seemed harmless, but I finally got the bug last weekend to just start throwing everything out. If we haven't been in those boxes or missed whatever was inside in nearly 4 years, we won't miss it if it hits the dumpster. That instantly opened up the room and it felt like I just upgraded my office.

After that I ditched every lingering piece of unwanted paper, pens, and made my desk as clean as possible. Put a few pictures on the wall and the transformation is complete.

Nothing has changed in terms of what I do in my office, because I still just sit up there to use the computer and type. But just having a cleaner and clutter-free space makes me feel better about being up there, and it's so much easier to actually get stuff done. Might be all just psychological, but it works!

Clutter and twitter are the anti productivity champions. I try to keep my desk clear, which in turn keeps your mind clear to focus on work. It never seems to stay clear but I do try.
