It's a priority to me to teach my kid's proper money management skills. I've just switched my new freshman in high school, to being in charge of his own lunch money for school. He's responsible to writing his own checks when the school needs more lunch money in his account. I'm going to look into this material, especially for my younger kids.

A paper route at the age of 12 was an excellent experience about running your own business and money.

Dealing with customers, billing, collections at that age taught me more than I can remember.

Bought myself a Commodore 64 too!

The article, "Prosperity 4 Kids Product Review" is quite informative. I like the four categories:
giving, investing, saving, and spending. I cannot say that I agree with the percentage distribution (and that is okay) but I do like the comment that "Kids will grow resentful to the plan if they are not allowed to spend some of their money." My website is http://www.hizmoney.com Thank you for sharing this article with us.

@Gypsie: My daughter is almost ten years-old - going on twenty! I only wish I was as savvy as her when I was her age. Think of the wealth I could have built, and the debt I could have avoided!
@Mark: It's not a bad idea. When she is able to crank out some full-length posts I may do just that. And of course, with earned income she'll be eligible to invest a little of that money in a Roth IRA!
@DDFD: Great idea - and she may do well with a site like Etsy, or even eBay. Cultivate that entrepreneurial streak now while she's young.

Nice post!

It is never too soon to get kids started on this mindset of managing their money,

As for getting kids going in a business . . . I am subtly suggesting it to mine every chance I get.

An example:

My 13 yo daughter has a creative flair and likes jewelry-- I have suggested to her a few times that she design her own and sell it online . . .
