Amazon’s origin story has every ingredient of an internet fairy tale. Sensing the potential of connecting distant buyers and sellers online in 1999, founder Jeff Bezos began selling paperbacks out of his garage Belllevue, WA. Within two years, his e-tail platform sold just about everything–DVDs, MP3 downloads, computer software, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, and toys. Bezos’ e-tail model immediately changed the way retailers sell, attain and store merchandise. And today, whether measured by customers, revenue or sales, Amazon remains the number one e-retailer in the world.

Birth of a Giant
The American multinational electronic commerce company, Amazon, is the #1 e-tailer in the world. With headquarters in Seattle, Washington, Amazon has separate websites for the US, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, and China. Netherlands, Sweden, Russia, Mexico and India are also due to gain their own respective websites. Amazon has become a worldwide phenomenon.
It started amazingly small, with a big vision from one shockingly business-savvy individual. In 1994, Jeff Bezos began Amazon as a third party bookseller based from his garage in Bellevue, WA. Amazon.com launched one year later. With ambition that in hindsight is more than appropriate, he named it after the Amazon River—one of the largest in the world. The site quickly diversified and began selling DVDs, MP3 downloads, computer software, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, and toys.
Initially, Amazon’s growth was so slow it prompted stockholders to complain, demanding Bezos to consider redirection. Even so, Bezos was named person of the year by Time magazine. With the takeoff of online retail in the early 2000s, Amazon made some heavy and swift advances. In 2001, Amazon hit sales over a $1 billion and turned its first profit of $5 million. Today’s Amazon serves 137 million users and sales have skyrocketed to $34 billion.
Product and Development
Amazon popularized online shopping by offering people a diverse range and huge selection of products at great prices. Because the company’s site allows third party sellers, it is easy to find exactly what you’re looking for at a comfortable price point. Used and rare books and textbooks, for instance, can be easily found for prices well below the going price in bookstores. Amazon also has a history of their own brand expansion and persistent innovation in all reaches of online capitalization. Consider Amazon’s brand proliferation:
- Amazon Publishing: Amazon’s own publishing unit, composed of multiple imprints that center on different genres.
- Pinzon: Amazon’s private brand label. Starting 2005, Pinzon trademarked textiles, kitchen utensils, and other household goods. Since, it’s been expanded and renamed as Amazon Basics—it offers private-label consumer electronics that include AV cables and blank DVD media.
- Amazon Mp3: Only a little late to online downloadable media, Amazon Mp3 was launched in 2007. It offers new and upcoming CDs for as low as $10. CDS, records, and MP3s are all available for purchase.
- Amazon Cloud allows easy uploads and the Amazon Cloud Player allows easy listening.
- Amazon S3: Amazon has expanded its groundbreaking web services to include Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). The cloud platform so vast that it has the capability of storing 82 books for every single person in the world!
- Amazon Prime: Launched in the U.S. in 2005, Prime users receive free two-day shipping for any purchase. For a flat annual fee, users also get discounts on one-day shipping and access to instant streaming movies and TV shows. As of 2011, Prime members also have access to the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library. This is an optimal service for anyone that is a frequent Amazon shopper, and avid consumer of books and movies.
- Amazon’s Kindle Fire: Amazon’s first generation tablet computer and e-book Reader aggregation. Offered at half the price of an iPad, the affordable, state-of-the-art Kindle Fire runs a customized version of the popular Android operating system. Comprehensive Amazon Kindle support is available through the Amazon website.
World-Leader in Commerce and Global Affairs
Not only does Amazon consistently thrive to be better for the average consumer, offer lower prices, expand selection, advance convenience, they seek to better the community and the world as well. This tenet of responsibility is evident in their history of contributions made to dozens of nonprofits across the nation, disaster relief campaigns, employee volunteer programs, author grants, and Amazon Web Services’ credits for educators. Amazon has responded swiftly to domestic and world crises, including 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the 2004 earthquake. Amazon even reactivated a dormant Red Cross Donation Channel in response to the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami. Amazon also prides itself on responsibility to the planet through its use of environmentally friendly packaging and non-toxic and recyclable shipping containers. Green products are also sold on Amazon.com; and Amazon invests in sustainable design of its own buildings.
Amazon continuously works to improve its customer service through initiatives such as the packaging feedback program, in which they call on customers to review their experience with Amazon packaging. Check out Amazon’s customer service options, including current order tracking and the option to modify open orders. Amazon is also applauded for its interactive Kindle support and the easy, but secure access to user account settings.

And if you’re wondering just how to benchmark just how profound this company’s unparalleled 17 year growth has been, you’ll need to take a moment to consider our infographic, “Fathoming Amazon” below. Certainly Amazon’s development can only be compared to the thunderous rise of Walmart. And in some ways, the curve is steeper: the million-title-bookseller turned world’s-largest-retailer hit the $50 billion sales mark in half the time it took Walmart. As far as online sales go, Amazon has laid waste to a list of successively higher-caliber competitors. Playing full-court with Barnes & Noble to Walmart all the way to Apple, Amazon just keeps outgrowing its labels: bookseller, e-tailer and now tech company?

Still one of my favourites here at FD. “Understanding Amazon’s reach is like trying to fathom space.” What a great line!
Not sure if this counts as a coupon, but it is definitely a frugal way to get Amazon gift cards. There is a new free iphone/android app offering a $5 Amazon gift card for new users. You can get additional coupons for referring others. Here is the link: http://bit.ly/AbQOOX
Keep up the good work FrugalDad.
Just thought I should clarify that you do receive the giftcard instantly upon connecting an account. The app kind of reminds me of Paypal meets Square. Might even keep it
.
Clover is still giving away $5 Amazon cards. Here is the link since the one above expired.

Forgot to mention SwagBucks…free to join and you can pick up about $25 a month in giftcards. That about ends my Amazon tricks haha. Helps a lot since we have a little one on the way…still haven’t checked if Amazon drop ships diapers
Well the Clover beta is over….but I’m really starting to enjoy Swagbucks. I received $25 in Amazon cards in Feb. and I also got a $25 Bass Pro card. It is a little more time consuming, but my tip would be to do Surveys and use the Search bar. They do add up.
If you haven’t joined, they have a promotion going on that you can do a free trial of Netflix and earn $1000 swagbucks (that $10 in Amazon cards). Hope that helps.

Hey Seth,
Thanks for the Swagbucks information. I heard about it about a month ago and forgot in my everyday busy schedule until I read your comment. It looks like a very nice Rewards Program.. Thanks again.
