My educational background was relatively non-traditional. Immediately following high school, I attended Auburn University and studied pre-med. After a couple years there I found myself struggling financially, and burned out from trying to work and go to school. As my sophomore year came to a close, I found myself broke, homesick, and yearning to return home after a death in my family. I decided to return to my hometown and find a job.
The birth of our first child some years later inspired me to get back in school. I enrolled at a local university to pursue a degree in Computer Information Systems. A job change led me to another city with limited educational opportunities, so I completed my degree requirements online at Troy University with a Bachelor of Science in Management.
My initial experience both working and attending school full time left a very serious impression on me. In an effort to help aid students financially, so they can take full advantage of a fruitful college career, I’m starting this scholarship. Read below to find out details and I look forward to awarding the first winner!

What a great opportunity. Too bad I’m not eligible because I’m studying in the UK. I just wanted to point out however, that in the last line where is says ‘…and send it to scholarships.’ the hyperlink that you have provided goes to your frugaldad at frugaldad dot com email address and not the scholarships at frugal dad dot com email address that is listed at the bottom of the application form. Anyway, just wanted to give you a heads up about the incorrect link and say kudos for offering such a cool opportunity.
Darn! I wish I could apply too. I’m in Australia
I have an undergraduate degree (Recreation) but am looking to go back and get a second undergrad degree in nursing. Would I be eligible to apply?
My big mistake was I listened to my parents the first time when they said “Just get a sheet of paper” instead of doing something I could do to make a living.
This is extremely generous of you.
Just want to say thank you for doing it. I am not a candidate, but I do research on higher education and entrepreneurship and while I do not specifically study debt/costs/financing etc.. its big enough that I have good knowledge. Your scholarship will change the lives of individuals forever and most likely change the lives of members of their families and communities.
Your extension of opportunity to others is one of the distinguishing features of American entrepreneurs versus the activities of those who hold wealth in other countries. (see research by Zoltan Acs at GMU). Thanks again for your scholarship, its is a meaningful act.
When under the requirements it says “Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university”, does that mean you have to be currently attending the school? I am a senior in high school and will be attending Boise State University next year (already accepted), am I eligible?
I work with youth who are “aging-out” of Fostercare. Would they be eligible if they graduated high school 2 years ago?
God bless Frutal Dad. Gotta love ‘em!
Thanks Frugal Dad, caring even if you CAN’T spell frugal!!!
LOVE that F-r-u-G-a-l Dad.
Dsylexia is a disease. lol…… or fat finger.
I tried to get the application. It appears to be in a format my computer does not understand. Please make application available. Thanks.
I would suggest changing the file format of the application. It is a word file and filling out the form is a bit of a hassle in regards to keeping the format in tact.
Making it into a .pdf format with input fields would be much better.
just a thought.
Well i hope I qualify, i already have a AA and working on my bachelors in Anti-terrorism and homeland security.Hopefully finish and try to go work with Interpol.
I am a senior nursing student in University of Oklahoma BSN program in the Unites States. Also, I am a legal international student. Am I eligible to apply for this schoparship?
I second changing the format into a pdf with input fields. It’s hard to fill out without the blanks moving around and messing with the other areas of the applications.
Thank you for offering this scholarship! how ever, I seem to be having a problem downloading the application. Could you e-mail it to me in html or plaintext? My computer is super old…. Thank you!
I did not take SAT’s and I noticed that you ask for scores in your application. Is that a requirement or can I submit grades from the classes I have taken? I think you are awesome for doing this and I would like to do the same some day.
I was wondering if a high school transcript and documentation of our test scores would be needed to be sent in order to confirm that the GPA and SAT score filled out on application is true?
I was thinking of applying for this scholarship – but I’m not certain I qualify. I’m currently a junior in university, and I have been accepted to a study abroad program through my university.
Its a program that would essentially place me in an intern position and a home-stay in the Palestinian Territories, and leave me there for the summer. I’m looking for ways to finance this experience and stumbled across the Frugal Dad scholarship.
Am I eligible, even though I’m already a college student?
Soo you have to be enrolled in an university. Does that count If I’m accepted and am attending and register before the 30th of April when the deadline is?
Can a senior in high school who has been accepted to college in the Fall of 2012 apply?
I have a question reguarding the application for this scholarship. For the SAT portion of the application, I’m not sure if you know this or not, but there isn’t a, “Vocabulary,” section anymore. It’s only Writing, Math, and Reading. Do I just erase VOCABULARY with READING?
It is so generous that you created a scholarship after your own struggles.
To people who want it to be a pdf: If it were a pdf file, you wouldn’t be able to save it and email it.
Thank you, Frugal Dad. I applaud you for remembering the difficulties you had in your education and acting on it later in life. You really are having a significant impact on students’ lives.
Thanks for this opportunity !!! This is great
This opportunity is amazing! It takes a lot for a person to give back without any kind of reward in return so thanks for that
I will definitely take advantage of this for my environmental major, maybe being a tree hugger will help me in some way we will see haha
This is excellent, and I plan to include this on my blog (with your permission)?
Do you guys plan to offer this next year?
Thanks!
